C'est très certainement l'ouvrage le plus fascinant de la bibliothèque d'Evelyn Waugh. Les anglo-saxons le surnomment The Victorian Blood Book.
Un ex-dono sur la page de garde permet de situer ce livre sanglant : "To Amy Lester Garland--A legacy left in his lifetime for her future examination by her affectionate father. September 1, 1854".
D'après la tradition familiale, ce serait un cadeau de John Bingley Garland à sa fille Amy Lester Garland, offert lors de son mariage avec le Révérend Richard Pyper.
Le manuscrit comprend 45 pages illustrées de plusieurs centaines de collages de gravures et d'images pieuses, souvent rehaussés à l'encre rouge... d'où son surnom.
